Biography

Craig Barrie, Global Product Director, Applied Petroleum Technology

Craig holds a B.Sc. (Hon) in Earth Sciences from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) and a Ph.D. in Mineralogy & Geochemistry from the University of Liverpool (England). Following his Ph.D. he worked as a Teaching Fellow in Geosciences at the University of St. Andrews, lecturing on structural and applied geology before taking up a 2 year postdoctoral position back at the University of Glasgow. Craig left academia to work for Elementar UK and then Elementar Americas as a stable isotope instrument & applications specialist before joining GeoMark Research in 2015, first as a Senior Geochemist, and then as Director of Reservoir Geochemistry. He joined Applied Petroleum Technology in 2021 as a Senior Geochemist in APT USA and Global Product Director of the APT Group. For the past 6+ years his technical & research projects have focused on the geochemistry of petroleum systems both ‘conventional’ and especially ‘unconventional’, using an array of techniques and workflows. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed papers, on an array of geoscience topics, given numerous conference presentations and is the co-theme chair for geochemistry at the annual Unconventional Resources Technology Conference (URTeC).

Abstract

Organic geochemistry has been a crucial discipline in the understanding, definition, and source-to-oil correlation in petroleum systems for decades. Yet, it is a discipline which is only very rarely taught as part of a geologists curriculum and even then just the basics. With the relative scarcity of geochemistry specialists in the industry at the present day it is ever more important for geologists to have an understanding of how to make the most of both their legacy data and the approach needed for future projects. This talk will outline the best practice considerations for getting the most out of a geochemistry program whether it be in the appraisal, development or production stages.

Example data – from across the globe – will include:

(1) Assessment of well-site gas data and how this can be integrated with additional data sets;

(2) Enhanced screening and interpretation of source rock samples;

(3) Utility of production phases (gas, oil & water).

The goal of this talk is not to teach a course in organic geochemistry but to guide non-geochemists in best practices for this work and provide a snapshot of how to really apply the data and interpretive results they get to their workflows.
